[FIX] How to block unwanted spam text messages.

Many of our customers receive unwanted spam text messages. In the past we could not block the spam text messages without also removing voicemail. A text messaging restriction soc was created to block text messaging completely. That SOC code is MMSRSTRCT. However, if the customer does want text messaging but they just want to get rid of spam, they should first reply STOP to the message being sent. If that does not fix the issue, you can call Data Support. They will find out where the message is coming from and either block the sender or unsubscribe the customer. Please NOTE: Dealer Care will still tell you that there is no way to restrict this service without removing voicemail. You must talk to Data Support.

"How To" Erase all contact information on a Blackberry.

>Options>Security>General Settings>Wipe Handheld Sets the phone back to factory defaults but some information may still remain. To completely wipe the handheld, here are a couple tips.

1) Assign a password to the device and then input the password wrong 10 times !
* To assign a password to a BB device: Go to home screen and select "Options" (this is an icon that looks like a wrench). Select "Security" from the Options list. Go to the line item that says Password. Use the trackwheel to enable the password. When you save the settings, the device will ask you to enter a new password. Assign a alphanumeric password to the device.
* Input the password wrong 10 times: Power cycle the device (power if off and then back on). The device will ask you for your password. Input a wrong password 10 times. The device will give you a few warning messages. After the 10th attempt, the device will erase all user data and do a power cycle.

1) Erase all data using the "desktop manager" software
* Launch the Blackberry "desktop manager" software utility on your PC and make sure that it is connected to the BB device in the cradle.
* Launch "Backup and Restore" utility from the desktop manager menu.
* Click on the button that says "Advanced..".
* The application will read all the data from the device, organize them, and then display on the screen (on the right column). Select all the data (email, calendar, phone logs, browser bookmarks, etc.) that you want to erase. You can select multiple entries by holding on to the CTRL button while you select them. Click on the button labeled "Clear" to erase all the data from the device.

Blackberry 7510, 7520, 7100i Text Messaging

How do you Text Message on a Blackberry?

On the Nextel Blackberries (7510, 7520, 7100i) true text messaging does not exist as you may be used to seeing it. You may occassionally receive an SMS but find that when you reply, the message never arrives to the recipient. This is because Nextel uses SMS to alert you of Voicemails, however, the blackberry is not designed to send SMS.

However, there are a couple work arounds!

The first is to use an instant messaging application. For yahoo, go to the downloads link on your Blackberry wireless web and download Yahoo messenger.

For AIM, you can download RambleIM at http://wireless.sra.com/ramble/

At http://www.teleflip.com you can send emails that will be converted to text messages for you FREE of charge (up to 5,000 per month). It's pretty easy, just send an email to the phonenumber@teleflip.com (example 5553331212@teleflip.com) and it will be converted to text message. When they reply back, they will be texting directly to your email address. If you don't see anything, check your junkmail folder!

You can also email people directly to their messaging email if you know what it is for their provider. To email people (send text message by email) send an email to their phonenumber@companymessagingsystem.com (example 5553331212@messaging.sprintpcs.com )

The phone will now not make any tones when you press the keys. This is particularly helpful in not making the person on the other end of the line listen to you press keys when you're digging through your menu.

Accessing Hotmail on a Blackberry, TREO, or other smartphones.

MSN Hotmail does not use a standard POP3 platform like most webmails do. Because of this, it doesn't function in outlook or other email obtaining programs like most other webmails would.

HotmailPLUS (a premium service) works with Outlook as long as you have WebDAV, which is wholly unimportant as far as most handheld devices go. However, the premium hotmail services have the ability to forward themselves to other email addresses.

If you have a premium Hotmail account you can tell it to forward any new messages to another email service such as Gmail. Because Gmail is a POP email service, you can set your handheld to access it's email, and through forwarding, your hotmail.

What if I don't want to pay for premium hotmail?

MSN also offers a mobile html page that will allow you to login to hotmail without all the extra script. Your email will appear as standard html hyperlinks and images will show the url, not the image, BUT you will be able to read your hotmail this way. Downside? You choose when to check your email; it isn't retrieved and notified in your smartphone, rather you view it through your browser just the same as if you were accessing it via the web.

If you want to try this FREE way to get hotmail on your Treo or Blackberry, go to this link while using your phone. http://mobile.msn.com/hm/folder.aspx

How do I get hotmail on my smartphone in "real time"?

WARNING: The following section is untried by any of ISCG's staff. These instructions require a more than intermediate understanding of computers, mail protocol, and internet in order to use them correctly and minimize the risk of "breaking" your current email setup. If you consider yourself a "techie" read on.

As I get a chance to apply the following info and find out about all the quirks I'll update this blog entry with any tips and solutions I find. As I have said before; use this at your own risk. The freeware linked here is in no way associated with ISCGonline and is merely linked as a convience to our customers. ISCG is not responsible for any results of using the following information.

Legal jargon aside; here is what I have found.

A program exists that operates on your tool bar in Windows that goes out, reads your email, can mark it either "read" or "deleted" and forward those emails to an email address of your choice.

This program is called GetMail and can be found at Getmail.

If you do not have a premium Hotmail service you will need a program called FreePOPs. This essentially allows your hotmail to function as a POP service however, I have not had the chance to try this out.

On both of these programs you will need to read the online manuals carefully and look online for FAQ's on utilizing them. Once you have hotmail scripting through FreePOPs, you should be able to have GetMail set up on a timer to access your hotmail and forward it to your POP3 email address. With your smartphone configured to go out and check your POP3 mail account, you now have Hotmail on your phone.

[FIX] 7100i Speaker shuts off in holster - How to Fix

There have been a few instances where our clients who own Blackberry 7100i handsets have had trouble with an issue where the speaker function of the phone gets turned off each time they remove it from the holster.

Here is how to fix the 7100i speaker shutting of in holster:

The speaker button on the top of the phone is a toggle to turn the speaker on and off for each call. Meaning you can push it to toggle the speaker back on, but soon as you put the phone back in the holster; the speaker gets shut off again, as I am sure many of you have discovered.

There is actually a keystroke you can use to tell the 7100i that you want or do not want the speaker to be enabled automatically when removed from the holster. That keystroke is:

Hold down the # key for 2 seconds.

I was amazed at how simple this solution was, yet how elusive it was while searching for it in the manual.
