What's the difference between the TREO 700p and TREO 700wx ?

I've been asking myself the same thing; so I went and found out!

The obvious answer is that the TREO 700p uses the Palm OS platform and the TREO700wx uses Windows Mobile 5.0 OS Platform.

What does this actually mean in a world where almost all platforms conform to very similar structures?

As far as hardware goes, these phones are identical. They both include the following features:

*60MB of Memory Storage (easily upgraded with an SD memory card)
*Supports most forms of Bluetooth
*Infrared port
*ActiveSync through USB
*Touch Screen
*Music player, camera, camcorder, streaming video

What neither of these have is WiFi capability. You can access broadband-like speeds through the EVDO service available through some carriers, but you'll need to purchase a WiFi card which unfortunately takes up your SD expansion slot if you want to use a HotSpot connection somewhere that EVDO isn't available. HotSpots are also free most of the time whereas EVDO is a monthly fee through the carrier.

The TREO 700p has been generally scoring about half a star higher on user reviews than its Windows counterpart on a five star scale that most review sites use. I believe there are a couple reasons for this. The first is that while most people are more familiar with Windows, the palm software is more user friendly and thus is more desirable by customers that aren't computer wizards. The second reason is perception. Smartphones are handheld computers; they WILL LOCK UP on occasion. Windows, being notorious for this in prior years with their PC software, I believe carries this stigma to the handheld. It's not that it locks up more frequently, just that it is much easier to blame "windows" for the lockup.

Finally, if you are a Realtor in the U.S., until Thanksgiving; you can receive major discounts on the price of your TREO 700p, bill credits, and free Vision Web service though Sprint PCS. This is part of the GE/Supra program that allows Realtors access to the infrared lockboxes on model homes. The TREO 700wx is not part of this program.

In conclusion, the phones are pretty much the same thing. If you are really familiar with Windows and are not a realtor; go with the 700wx. Otherwise, the 700p has gotten better reviews in the area of user friendliness.
